About Toothless

Toothless was our first IMechE UAS Challenge drone, participating in the 2019 edition. The team settled on a unique octa-plane configuration, using 8 motors for VTOL and one for forward motion.

Achievements

Despite being a debut entry, Toothless secured 3rd place in the ‘Design Award’. Unfortunately, a crash caused an early end to its flight campaign, finishing 19th out of 32 for the Grand Champion award.

  • Configuration: 9 Propellers (8 Vertical, 1 Horizontal)
  • Power: 500W in plane mode, spiking to 2.5 kW for VTOL.

Mission

Developed for delivering humanitarian aid, Toothless demonstrated the potential of VTOL technology in combining the flexibility of a helicopter with the range of a plane.
