About Thunderbird

Our 2022 iMechE UAS Challenge entry, Thunderbird, features a unique and newly developed box-wing design. This innovative configuration decreases aerodynamic drag and minimizes wingtip vortices, pushing efficiency to the next level.

Key Features

  • Box-Wing Configuration — The only drone with a box-wing design at this size, achieving a lift-to-drag ratio of >10.
  • Internal Payload Bay — Designed with a 4-litre capacity to carry packages securely within the airframe.
  • 3D Printed — The entire frame is 3D-printed, making it easy and cost-effective to produce.

Competition

At the 2022 UAS Challenge, Thunderbird won the Media & Engagement Award for effectively engaging with media, schools, and local students through STEM outreach. Due to a technical issue the drone could not fly on time, finishing 17th out of 32 participants.

Mission Profile

Thunderbird is developed to be a low-cost, low-infrastructure alternative for delivering medicine, essential aid, and communications equipment. With full autonomous flight capabilities, it can take off and land without manual input, making it perfect for deployment in rural areas.
